MIRS
A Jackfruit tree wood shell with two heads, bass and tenor, and lace tension tuning. Held horizontally, the two opposing heads are bass (approximately 8") and tenor (approximately 6.5"). Overall length is approximately 24". The Southern Mridangam tenor head has a wider outer Chat layer that fills the space between the Syahi and the gajara( braided rim). Sliver-thin reeds are inserted between the layers to add to the sound. The base head also has an inside load. There are no tuning blocks (thought you could insert wooden dowels if you wanted). The is a special rhythm instrument for accompaniment to vocal or devotional music.
